We are at the midpoint of 2020, and if you had fallen asleep at the beginning of the year and just woken up, you might think it's been a real snoozer – most stock indices are relatively flat, bonds are slightly positive, and the dollar is down a tad. But it would be an understatement to say this has been one of the more chaotic six-month periods in history.
Vladimir Lenin once said, “There are decades where nothing happens, and there are weeks when decades happen.” I think it is safe to say that we’ve just experience the latter.
Autumn has arrived, students are back in school (virtually), the World Series is complete (following a shortened season), and playgrounds are open again in San Francisco (Benno and Archer's minds are blown!). Life is trying to get back to some sense of normal.
A significant inflection point across many aspects of American society, 2020 will certainly be a year that is studied for decades to come. So much of what transpired reveals the fragility of our species and our democracy, yet it also highlights the resilience of humanity and the genius of the American experiment, imperfect as they may be. To truly live means to evolve. And we are evolving.
